Step 2: Updating AMD Video Drivers

Updating video drivers are quite a hassle on Ubuntu if you don't have much experience. I have made a guide that I have not have any trouble with and all it takes is a couple of commands in Terminal and a restart :)

The guide below was made by me, do not reproduce without permission (c)
==================================================

FIRST OFF: The default display driver used is an open-source driver. This works right out of the box BUT it has no 3D acceleration so games cannot be played with it. We will download AMD Catalyst Control Center from AMD's website and install it all through Terminal. I am pretty sure the AMD HD 5000 series up are supported by the most current Catalyst Control Center Package at the time of writing (13.04 Stable).

This guide was taken from my Steam account that I made myself.

Many people use Linux thinking their GPU will work out the box, but the drivers are open sources leaving people without 3D acceleration!

This guide is by far the easiest way for people with no experience with Linux or computers to get the latest drivers for your AMD GPU without needing any technical experiance!
All you have to do is copy (Ctrl-C) and paste (Ctrl-Shift-V) these commands into Terminal (Ctrl-ALT-T)

FEW NOTES:
-This will download a package with both 32bit and 64bit drivers! EASY!!
-Make sure your device is supported by thr latest drivers, This release is 13.04 Stable
-When the next stable drivers come out, this guide will be updated
-Used Ubuntu 13.4 but should work with older versions
-Took about 3 minutes (will vary on connection speed)

-----Open terminal and install the prerequisite packages: -------

sudo apt-get install build-essential cdbs dh-make dkms execstack dh-modaliases linux-headers-generic fakeroot libqtgui4 devscripts

-----If you are using the x86_64 architecture (64 bit): -------

sudo apt-get install lib32gcc1

-----Create a directory for the package-----

mkdir catalyst13.4 && cd catalyst13.4

-----Download the latest Catalyst package. (note that this package contains 32bit AND the 64bit driver)---

(Press enter and wait for the computers name to appear at the bottom then do the rest.)

unzip amd-catalyst-13.4-linux-x86.x86_64.zip

(press enter again and wait for the computer name to appear (this means the code has finished) )

chmod +x amd-catalyst-13.4-linux-x86.x86_64.run

(press enter again and wait for the computer name to appear (this means the code has finished) )

-----Create and install the .deb packages.-----

sudo ./amd-catalyst-13.4-linux-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Ubuntu/raring

(press enter and let it finish)

-----Lastly, activate fglrx to initialise the driver, (if you don't you may not see anything on the reboot-----
sudo dpkg -i fglrx*.deb

(again press enter)

ALL DONE!! reboot and you should be able to see Catalyst Control Center in Launcher and the 3D accelerated driver will be installed.

Alex :)
